PreK & Kindergarten

The Fastest Plane: An Imaginary Journey Around the World &  Beyond with Valerie Baugh-Schlossberg. Sit back and get ready to Dance, Laugh, and Play through the streets and jungles of Brazil, America, Mexico, Indonesia, Egypt, or India. After experiencing this multi-lingual storytelling program, leave the program ready to hop on a plane and see the universe, dancing to the tunes of the world and wanting to tell your own stories and those of cultures all over the world.  Using rhyme, rhythm, and repetition, in English & Spanish, and other Interactive Storytelling techniques we build solid foundations for literacy and scholastic success. (Mondays at 4:00 – 4:35 pm EDT)

Growing with Stories – Planting Seeds of Resilience with Noa Baum. During times of crisis, stories help calm and guide us. Join storyteller Noa Baum for a fun interactive class with stories songs and games that attend to social-emotional needs in challenging times, and are rooted in early literacy and core academics. (Wednesdays at 9:00 – 9:35 am EDT)

Invisible Scribble: Playing and Learning with Words and Art with Amber Myers. Explore a fun story with the artist through language and art. Experiment with creating colors with materials you can find in your home; like markers, paper towels, and water. Ask a question and discover the answer through play. In the end have a blast, create a piece of art and learn something new. (Fridays at 4:00 – 4:35 pm EDT)

1st & 2nd Grades

Prenda La Luz – Light the Way: Learning Through Storytelling with Carrie Sue Ayvar. “Había una vez/Once upon a time . . . ” with those magical words we can illuminate the path to lifelong learning. With bilingual stories, in both English and Spanish, we develop listening skills, sequencing and story recall, and creative and critical thinking skills. Discover how to figure out the parts of the story; Characters, Setting, Problem & Solution, with a simple Story Elements Chant. Increase vocabulary, reading comprehension and essential 21st Century skills through the ancient art of Storytelling. (Tuesdays at 11:00 – 11:35 am EDT)

Syllables & Bonds – Bomani Armah. This class explains the reading, writing, and arithmetic of Hip-Hop performance. From learning to recognize vowels and syllables to understanding the rhythm patterns that turn those syllables into raps over a beat, students are engulfed in this highly interactive presentation. Students will be dancing for more than half the time while learning all the time. (Thursdays 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm EDT )

Discovering the Power of the Written Word: Using Creative Writing and Storytelling to Motivate Students to Become Authors – Arianna Ross (4th-8th Grades). Writing has had the ability to empower, anger, hurt, encourage, or excite. Through a series of creative writing exercises and storytelling, students discover the power of their own words to tell a story, change someone’s opinion, or create an imaginary place. Join professional storyteller, author, and arts educator, Arianna Ross as she guides students to write and prepare their own creative stories, speeches, and more! (Tuesdays at 2:00 – 2:45 pm EDT)

BARS: The Bomani Armah Writing System – Bomani Armah. Students will write an autobiographical rhyme that boasts about themselves and their community. They will also learn the BARS Writing Process: Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing…” and receive in-depth instruction on elements of creative writing, by writing a rhyme about and then collectively write a rhyme on a topic that has been covered in class. (Thursdays at 4:00 – 4:45 EDT)

Puppetry Power with Steve Barker. Gather paper, scissors, markers, and more to create a plethora of puppets and learn the basic exercises to begin mastering the art of puppetry. Make puppets, move puppets and voice puppets with designer and Master Teaching Artist, Steve Barker. (Fridays at 1:00 – 1:45 pm EDT)

When I say Poetry you say Rocks! with Regie Cabico. Slam poet and Master Teaching Artist Regie Cabico guide students in the building blocks of poetry. Poetry is intense feeling plus imagery and students will use their 5 senses to jumpstart their first poem and share what stirs our deepest emotions. Be prepared with a writing tool and paper. We will open our imagination boxes and pull out our zany images, express who we are, and create silly and awesome images. (Wednesdays at 2:00 – 2:45 pm EDT) 

Bard to Bars: Hip Hop Shakespeare – Drew Anderson. Award-winning hip hop thespian and veteran teaching artist Drew Anderson presents an online experience like no other! Join Drew as he invokes his experiences as a member of Baltimore’s acclaimed Fools and Madmen cast to help us reinvestigate, re-appreciate, and remix the characters, plots, themes, and wordplay of the Bard himself: William Shakespeare! (Thursdays at 2:00 – 2:45 pm EDT)

The Purple Bunny Bounced a Ball Over The Atlantic Ocean: Writing Pictures and Drawing – (All Ages) – Regie Cabico. Explore poetry and visual art to express our feelings while we’re in our homes. Create magical animals and exotic places to conjure a colorful world for us to play in. Bring paper to write on and crayons, pencils and paints to draw. The poetry will inform our visuals so be prepared to get silly and cool. This workshop is for parents to create with their children. (Wednesdays at 7:00 – 7:45 pm EDT)

Gather ‘Round: Bedtime stories for the entire family – Guest Artist each week. During times of crisis, stories help calm and guide us. Families are invited to gather ’round our virtual fire with acclaimed guest storytellers. Engage, entertain, and connect with stories of hope, courage, and wisdom from diverse cultures. (Sundays at 8:00 – 8:30 pm EDT)
