“Our most impactful takeaway was that some of our most impacted students with 504s and IEPS (support plans for students with physical or mental disabilities) were the students that shined when it came to sharing poetry. They were applauded by their classmates and brought teachers to tears because students who hadn’t engaged in a genuine manner all year were commanding a presence through their written words.”

Students were engaged throughout the entire process, despite the fact that they were virtual. Students continued to talk about the stories they had written before and after working with both artists. Even when they weren’t working with the artists, they were trying to think of what else they could add to their story. One class had to end their story with “To be continued…” since they had so much more they wanted to add to it. Students in other classes were also complimenting their peers who were in a different class on the stories they had created. It was wonderful to hear!”

“Most students were actively engaged throughout the program. Students, particularly ESOL (English as a Second Language), had the opportunity to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students gained confidence in themselves and their ability to be creative, to think/write/speak expressively. (They learned) how to support others in a community.”

“What resonated the most for me was that the arts can easily be accessible to all. The students were able to create their own poetry and perform it. It was a tremendous experience watching them succeed and gain confidence in this area.”

“Students became more confident in themselves and certainly in their writing. They became more comfortable with expressing deep thoughts and feelings in both a written and performative manner. Students were introduced to poetry in a new way and were surprised and delighted that poetry wasn’t just rhyming couplets. Students were engaged in the creative process with Regie, and became thoughtful and respectful listeners to their peers. Students in the school have continued to use writing and poetry as a creative outlet during down time.”

“My film students turned on their cameras routinely for the first time all year. Their final projects are the best films they have created thus far. My special ed theatre students LOVED the residency.

-One student with Downs Syndrome said “This is the funnest class ever!”
-A substitute teacher told me this is the most engaged she’s ever seen students in the classroom.
-A majority of students memorized the short poem – the most memorization they’ve done all year.”

“Students don’t get to see other kids at the bus stop, passing in the hall, out at recess or leaving for dismissal in virtual learning. These things use to be normal parts of the school day that many students took for granted. Due to the pandemic, students now only see the students in their classroom on the computer screen.
